Local rhythm

Lunch 12:30–15:00, dinner rarely before 20:00, and most monuments close at 18:00 with last entry an hour earlier.

Getting around

A rechargeable Navegante card covers metro, tram and lifts. Airport to centre is about 20 minutes on the red metro line.

Practical tips

01Tram 28 early or not at all

Before 09:00 it is transport; after that it is a queue. The 12 does a shorter version of the same climb.

02Belém is half a day

Monastery, tower and pastries sit 6 km west of the centre. Going and coming back eats 90 minutes on its own.

03Shoes over style

Calçada portuguesa is beautiful and slippery, especially after rain. Flat soles with grip make the difference.
